Years UBM have operated

2019 onwards (although we ran a “tradtional” beach mission from 1969 to 2018).

Overview

Once a fishing and whaling port and the home port of Captain Cook, Whitby today still retains its maritime charm. Of course, though the fishing boats still go out from time to time, the whalers and Captain Cook are long gone. However you can still see a reminder of those days as you walk through the whalebone archway on the West Cliff, just next to the Captain Cook statue, or take a sail on the replica of Captain Cook’s ship, the Discovery. But Whitby’s main industry today is undoubtedly tourism.

The town has won a number of tourism awards in recent years and attracts people all year round. Much of its appeal lies in the historic streets of the old town, walks along the harbour-side and harbour entrance pier, and of course its family-friendly beach where at low tide there are vast expanses of lovely smooth sand.

Accommodation

c/o Whitby Evangelical Church,

Skinner Street,

Whitby,

North Yorkshire,

YO21 3AJ

Everyone stays in Whitby Evangelical Church, which is our HQ for the mission. The men sleep in the church sanctuary on the first floor and the women sleep in one of the ground floor rooms. There are two showers in the building, available for team use. The main church lounge is spacious for our needs and there is a well-fitted kitchen. We use the rear entrance to the church on Poplar Row, off Back St Hilda’s Terrace. For families it may be possible to arrange accommodation with church members, though this cannot be guaranteed. However there is lot of holiday accommodation for let in the area.

Team members need to bring a camp bed/airbed and a sleeping bag or other bedding.
